Fine line tattoos: everything you need to know before getting one

Fine line is one of the most in-demand tattoo techniques today. If you've seen those tattoos with delicate, almost hand-drawn lines and a level of detail that seems impossible, that's fine line. And if you're thinking about getting one, this guide answers all the common questions before you sit in the chair.

What exactly is the fine line technique?

Fine line literally means thin line. And the key to everything is the needles used.

Before around 2018, tattoo artists used 7RL or 9RL needles for words or lines. The number indicates how many needles are grouped inside the cartridge: a 7RL has seven needles together. At our Madrid studio we work with 1RL and 3RL cartridges — the thinnest groupings that exist. A 1RL has a single needle. A 3RL has three.

That changes everything. The jump from seven or nine needles down to one or three is what allows the level of precision and delicacy that defines modern fine line.

Fine line vs single needle — are they the same?

Almost. Single needle literally means one needle, and refers to the strict use of 1RL cartridges. Fine line is the broader concept that includes both 1RL and 3RL.

The difference between using one or the other is more a matter of the artist's preference and the specific design than a visible difference in the final result for the client. A 3RL cartridge handled well can produce a line just as thin as a 1RL. To the client's eye, the difference is usually not noticeable. What determines the result is the hand and experience of the artist, not the exact number of needles inside the cartridge.

What designs work best in fine line?

Fine line adapts to practically any motif but there are designs where it shines especially. Words, quotes and typography are one of the great strengths because the precision of the stroke allows fonts to be reproduced with an extraordinary level of detail. Botanical elements like flowers, leaves and branches work beautifully because the technique perfectly captures organic shapes. Geometry and minimalist symbols stay perfectly defined thanks to the cleanness of the stroke.

What doesn't fit well in fine line are large solid color fills or very dense shadows. There are other styles for that. What does work very well within fine line is dotwork shading, which adds volume and depth to the design while keeping all the delicacy of the technique.

Does fine line age well?

Better than most people think. In fact, fine line is one of the styles that ages best in the long run, and there's a technical reason behind this.

Over the years, skin stretches slightly and the ink of any tattoo tends to expand a bit. If you have a traditional tattoo from twenty years ago, you can see how lines that were thin have widened considerably. Now imagine that tattoo already started with very thick lines. The result over time can look very different from what it was originally.

How long does a fine line session take?

It depends on size and complexity. A mini tattoo of a letter or a simple symbol can be ready in ten or fifteen minutes. A floral composition on the forearm can take between one and two hours.

And here's something important to clarify: if you read that a session lasts an hour it can sound intimidating, especially if you've never been tattooed. But the pain of a fine line with the 1RL or 3RL needles we use today has absolutely nothing to do with the pain of the tattoos done before with much thicker needles. They're completely different experiences. Many clients tell us they expected something much worse and are surprised by how manageable it is.

Does fine line hurt more than other styles?

On the contrary. Working with such thin needles and more superficially, the sensation is noticeably lower than styles with more fill. Body placement matters more than style.

Can fine line be done on any body zone?

Yes, though some zones hold up longer. High-friction zones like hands, feet and fingers tend to need touch-ups sooner than others.

Can I walk in without an appointment and get tattooed the same day?
