How many days to keep the tattoo patch — the short answer
If you've just been tattooed at Sinkply — or you're simply trying to work out the patch situation — here is what you need to know. This guide answers the questions we hear most often.
What is the tattoo patch and what does it do?
The patch (also called second skin or protective film) is a transparent adhesive sheet placed over a fresh tattoo. It acts as a barrier against bacteria, friction and dust while the skin starts to heal. Unlike traditional bandages, it is breathable and lets you see the tattoo.
At Sinkply we use this system on every tattoo — especially fine line work, where the first hours make or break the final result.
How long to keep the tattoo patch on
Manufacturers recommend a two-phase process:
First patch: 24 hours
The first patch is applied at the studio the moment your tattoo is finished. It comes off at 24 hours. During that time it's normal to see fluid building under the film — plasma, leftover ink, and sometimes a touch of blood. Completely normal: the body is starting to heal.
Second patch: up to 7 days
After removing the first, apply a clean second patch. It can stay on up to 7 days — with one important exception:
If a lot of fluid builds up inside the second patch (ink, plasma, blood), take it off earlier and, if needed, apply a new one.
Too much trapped fluid can macerate the skin and affect healing — don't ignore it.
What if the patch falls off early?
It happens more often than you'd think — especially in high-movement areas (wrist, elbow, foot…). Don't worry.
At Sinkply we always keep spare patches at the studio. If yours peels off early, drop by and we'll put a fresh one on at no cost. What matters is keeping the tattoo protected during the first few days.
What if I take the patch off before time?
If you remove it before 24 hours on the first patch, or too soon on the second, the skin is exposed before it's ready. That can lead to:
- More sensitivity to fabric and friction
- Higher infection risk if it's not kept clean
- Ink loss, especially in fine lines
- Uneven healing
If for any reason you have to take it off early, wash the area with water and mild soap, pat it dry gently, and keep it away from sun, dust, pool and sea water.
Do fine line tattoos fade or disappear?
We get asked this a lot — and it makes sense. Fine line tattoos are more delicate than filled or bold work. The honest answer: a well-executed and well-cared-for fine line tattoo ages beautifully, but a few things matter:
- Care in the first weeks is key — the patch helps a lot here.
- Body placement: high-friction or high-movement zones tend to blur earlier.
- The sun: the biggest enemy of any tattoo, and especially of fine line. Use sunscreen once healed.
- Skin type: every skin absorbs ink a little differently.
At Sinkply we only do fine line, so on the day of your appointment your artist will tell you exactly what to expect for your chosen design and placement.
What are tattoos made only of lines called?
They're known as fine line tattoos, single needle, or minimal tattoos. They share thin, precise strokes and often a pencil-like finish. This is the style we specialise in at Sinkply.

One final note
This guide is general, based on manufacturers' instructions and our day-to-day at the studio. On the day of your appointment at Sinkply your artist will give you specific instructions for your tattoo, placement and skin type. Every tattoo is different — personal advice is always the best advice.
